I think I would work with what I had. Check fertility and maybe no till drill. I would work on the ground this spring and summer maybe spraying for weeds and cleaning up then working on fertility. Then no till seed this fall. I remember Allen Nation in his book Quality Pasture always said work with what you had. If you crop it and you have the weeds you say you will just expose more weed seed for later. You can spray with 2-4-D and not kill your white clover. It will burn it but not kill it. Red clover it will kill. I just read where you are calling it timber soil. I would want to know the ph on the soil as most woods lots are acidic I believe.
