Subject: Re: When are you breeding your heifers?

Driftless SW Wisconsin

My calves have been born starting the last week of March to about May 1.  Then been putting bull in about 3rd week in June. So heifers are about 14 months average when bred and calve around 23 months old.

I don't have the facilities to separate cows and heifers so they are all bred at same time.

As my system is developing (most steers and non-retained heifers processed for freezer beef in late April), I am trying to shift the whole process forward a couple weeks so I have a bit more time to get them closer to 1100 lb by harvest time off of grazing corn. My bull went in on June 6th last summer so calving should start about March 15th.

I don't see any problem with my Hereford heifers calving at 23 months so far.
