Rolla, ND | You wouldn't think it's a big deal but people actually will respect what you say more if you do dress for the job. Small towns can be pretty informal because relationships are close enough that clothes don't make that much difference, but if you are dealing with a public that doesn't know you well, especially if the meetings are broadcast, people form their opinion of you at least partially on how you dress. Dressing up a bit also shows that you respect the position yourself, hard to get others to do it if the people in it don't.
On to what to do.
Coat should be nothing unusual so you can use it with a lot of things. Black, blue, grey, browns all work with a wide variety of things.
Ties aren't so bad, it's a tie with the wrong shirt, that is a killer.
Buy a shirt with a collar that is really a size or two bigger than you need. Then when you tie the tie, it doesn't restrict your throat at all. What a lot of guys do is get a shirt with a collar that just lets them button it, then when you tie a tie it feels like you are being hanged. If you get it right you really don't even notice the tie.
One nice thing about the suitcoat is you never have to worry about plumber's butt when you drop some papers on the floor and bend over to get them. | |
