Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot | Most cattle producers don't feed grain. Actually I can't think of one that does. Lot of calves sold off of good irrigated meadows as long yearlings, most of the way finished already. Lot of others get backgrounded on foothills grass in CA. Lot of them end up in a midwest feedlot, but the feeding light calves thing is still somewhat of a midwest thing.
Most dairys will feed grain, but only if the ration will milk better than something else at a cheaper cost. Large dairys anymore have a lot of different commodities to pull from, more and more that are a by product and cheaper.
Seems both are reducing their reliance on grain rather than quitting.
