Subject: :I agree, Dairy cost of feed. edited

Little River, TX
Post Hoc ergo Propter Hoc? ie Don't confuse coincidence with cause?

Economy of size, just may be size may does not have a completive edge.

It just may not be a high cost of purchased feed vs. low price for product.

It could be that the management was not up to the job. Think how many kids go out for basket ball and how few play in the NBA, and how even fewer spend much time in the MBA.

This is a close to the mark.
This one would work well as a 1250 head total year around graze out dairy. There was and may still may be a 1,000 cow milking herd grazing operation maybe 70 miles east of Dallas and not far from I-20. Had/has 3 parlors. moved the crew from parlor to parlor in a bus, and the cleaning crew in a PU.

Not sure what he claims for feed cost now but at one time he claimed $1 / 100 lbs of milk was his real cost of feed.

Near T Tech they played with Tifton 85 under pivots and over buried drip irrigation, with managed grazing. Emphases on Managed. Use the drag hoses (LEPER ?) under a pivot for irrigation and in summer add misters to the plumbing for cooling.
Maybe plant Oklahoma common alfalfa into the grass. Feed the alfalfa seed to the cows during milking and let them plant the seed. Possibly do the same for other legumes. With some stockpiled Tifton 85 and some rye grass and small grains planted in the fall, it should work for 12 months. Feeding those cheese plants maybe go with seasonal milking and have all the cows freshen in March.

Still requires management. More emphases on forage management than found on most of the current crop of dairies, now.
