New Mexico | it's called a brand.
Traces right back to the ranch where that calf was born thus branded.
If the calf is sold then on to a grass deal here, gets the next owner's brand.
On seasonal incoming cattle from out of State...they either get branded, or can use a brand tag for the season.
Thus where they came from, the owner and the ranch they're run on is all documented.
When they leave, cattle are brand inspected and if they go back out of State ( most seasonal cattle do ) destination is documented ( exact location with phone numbers, owners etc ).
Livestock board inspects and logs every cattle transaction / movement ( they put it in a computer data base now...carry laptops ).
Thus always a paper trail on afore cattle thru the complete life chain of said animals.
