Subject: RE: Pilots, how many do we have here?

Marengo, Iowa
I got a fixed wing license in a Cessna 120, at the Ames, Iowa, airport in 1962 thru the Army ROTC flight trainning program. When I graduated and received my commission, they sent me to rotary wing flight school at Mineral Wells, Tx. and Fort Rucker AL. 20 months flying with the 125th in Hawaii, then a tour in VN, (66-67) flying armed gunships, back to Fort Wolters, as an instructor pilot. They let me out of the service in 1968, and I returned to the farm, to farm with my father. I then took lessons ( GI bill) at Cedar Rapids airport to get my instrument and multi engine rating, which never happened. Whenever it was good weather to fly, I needed to be farming. I still can see the picture in my mind of the NH 995 combine, broken down in the middle of a field, as I was getting my solo time and thinking I belong at the farm to get that thing running.
I ended with about 2000 hrs of flight time, before I gave it up completely.
