| As others have posted a USB to serial converter does not always perform identically to a genuine serial port.
I have tested these devices connected "legacy" serial equipment to desktop & laptop computers.
A USB serial converter may not support hardware or software flow control that a device may need.
A USB serial converter may introduce different timing (it may buffer data differently from the genuine serial port).
There is no guarantee that the performance of a USB serial converter will match a genuine serial port.
What I have found also, is that the more expensive USB serial converters tend to work better.
The best I have found are the Edgeport series from "Inside Out Networks" - I don't have any relationship with them except as a happy customer.
