Subject: RE: The collapse of agriculture during the 1929 depression

This doesn't tell of the CBOT price for corn in the depression, but a story told by my grandfather relates to the price.

Some farmers were sitting in the feed store and chewing about the price of corn for it had been $1.90-2.00 for a while then and the talk was that of a "new plateau" for corn prices (sound familiar?). Since my grandfather had just bought this place in 1928, the hope was high for the new plateau.

The youngest farmer was sent down to the elevator to find out the price of corn. He came back and said the most anyone could get was $0.09/bu. My grandfather said that not a word was spoken and everyone got up and left and it was a long time before anyone sat and visited in the feed store.
