It isn't just the "wet holes" It's anywhere in the soil profile that was prone to saturation or water movement and retention. We're seeing very shallow rooted corn in large areas. The corn plant looks healthy, but the ears are smaller. I am guessing that there is either a comprimise with nutrient uptake with the shallower root system, or it just wasn't sufficient to support the robust early growth when it became hot and dry in August. The yield maps show it very clearly in lower areas and areas of the field that might be between higher areas and water used the path of least resistance. In three fields we have harvested, (240 ac.) so far, it is costing an average of 30 bu./ac. less than last year. NE Illinois.
