SESD | I have been tossing around the idea of running calves on pasture instead of cow/calf. Have any of you switched to a program like this? How do you like it? How many calves do you stock for each pair? What are some of the #'s you use for figuring 1 vs. the other? How big do you buy the calves?
Would a program like this be less risky and more profitable if all the risks and costs are figured?
PROS as I see it--It would be easier to manage pasture as far as selling some in a dry year. It is always hard for me to justify selling cows in a dry year only to buy more the next year.
--No open cow problems, no bull to worry about, no disease associated with baby calves, no winter facilities, less headache, less equipment cost, less feed cost, less labor.
Am I missing something that would make this not look so appealing?
Sorry bout all the questions, but have been thinking about this and it would be a big change as we have been cow/calf for quite a number of years. | |
