Subject: Re: Corn Damage Question

Ontario
captplaid, I think you are getting at at the heart of the matter. Lack of heat, and sunshine (solar) last year, had a lot of corn never reach full maturity. Then if you handle that corn in the same way as any other year, up goes the damage. (How else could it be handled though?) It has to be combined, elevated, dried, and dropped into a bin like any other year. But if the kernels were not totally hard and mature at harvest, the result is damage.

This is what Lanworth and others were contesting on the January 2010 report. USDA puts out a big number, which does not take into account test weight and damage. The marketplace gets the signal there is lots of corn, it is assumed to be of good quality; and down we go! USDA knew the rumblings about the damage and test weight, but put out the big number anyways. For what reasons, you can draw your own conclusions.

I will add they did not account in January by increasing usage (due to test weight & quality), it finally comes out June 30th. When it is finally acknowledged it takes more to make the final product!
