Subject: RE: What's the deal with pinkeye?

Well Ben we run 400 momma cows and background all the calves, plus buy and breed a 120 replacement heifers for resale. A tube of tomorrow is $2.95 and will treat at minimum 5 head which is .59 cents a head, and a bottle of penicillin is $20.00 for a 250 ml bottle which will treat 125 eyes at 2cc per eye and cost .16 cents. Therefore the total cost to treat an eye is .75 cents. If I have to treat a 100 calves at .75 cents a head that is $75.00 and lets say I treat 25 replacement heifers at .75 cents a head that is $18.75. So my cost for treating bad eyes is $93.75. I sold cattle last week for $828.00 a head average on steers and heifers averaging 690 pounds. If I save one calfs eye from popping and having it sorted off at the barn and brining 75% of what the others bring that is a $200.00 savings on my part. Not to mention what saving an eye on one bred heifer is worth when they are selling for $1250.00 a head. The one calf alone more than pays for the treatment of a 125 eyes and my experience is when it is bad in a large scale herd you will get more than one pop-eye. So large or small herds it is still cost effective to treat eyes in my opinion no matter if you sell 400 calves or 4 calves. So if you get a kick out of my saving money the jokes on you.
