Subject: RE: Ration for back yard chickens?

Oklahoma
Easiest way to cheapen the ration is to let them run in the yard or a pasture. I haven't come up with a good ration to feed to cheapen things up alot other than just letting them run. To cheapen up the ration some, we started mixing cracked corn in with the bagged ration at 50%. That cheapened things up for a while until corn prices got high. Once they went up the price locally has not come down much. I have looked into screenings and can't find anything local that is any cheaper than what we are currently doing.

My grandpa would take the spoiled bread and produce from the local grocery store and feed it. I don't know how many chickens he fed at once (I would guess a couple hundred) but every morning he stopped at the grocery store and picked up "free feed".
