Subject: RE: Ration for back yard chickens?

Back in the day, we never tried feeding barley to chickens, but did feed oats and wheat. Wheat especially makes good chicken feed. Neighbor has good luck feeding wheat screenings he buys economically from his brother who runs a seed plant. If there is a seed plant in your area you might check to see of any grain screenings are available.

Some cracked corn would be good too and add color to the yolks. Keep oyster shell in front of the chickens at all times for a calcium source. Bone meal was a good calcium source too but of course is no longer available.

We used to feed a custom made pelleted feed to our 500 confined laying hens. I think it had enough SBM added to make around 20% protein. DDG might be an economical protein option compared to SBM, though it might lack a certain amino acid component required by poultry. I know DDG is not a complete protein for swine.
