Jay, If you use the proper wire size, losses should be minimal. Going two directions around a loop does cut the length of wire to the charger in half as you point out. I would not connect the two ends however. And unless you are going miles and miles, if you have a good high voltage AND high joule charger and proper wire size (a big enough pipe) the difference should be minimal. Keeping the "leaks" down by minimizing weeds leaning on the wire, using good insulators and making good connections with galvanized screw connectors at every joint seem to me to be bigger items than splitting the flow. jmho.
