I feel with heifers I have to keep a close eye on them, every 4 hours or so all the time, they dont know what they are doing. There is always something with them. I like to pin up heifers and their calves for atleast a day so they can figure it out. .If the weather is good a calf should be able to go about 12 hours without sucking, but the sooner they do suck the better. If they have full tummy why because of you tube them why would they want to go to mom for milk?
