Same thing happen to me several years ago, only the ground (neutral) wire broke in the plug. After starting the generator out in the shed walked to the house and had fire shooting out of wall outlets and various and assorted appliances fried. Needless to say wife was completely understanding and still leaves the house when I fire up the generator.
