I use Isopropyl or ether. It will clean the rubber off the faces and clean the belt dust off the weights and rollers. I don't think that brake cleaner or carb cleaner will hurt anything but not 100% sure. Iso is cheap and works good, take a little bottle from the gas station and poke a hole in the cap with a small drill bit or a finishing nail, then just squeeze the bottle and point it at what you want to clean.
