The problem is that many people get in over their heads. Was it wise? Well, no. But it happens.

People have $1,000 a month income to service $2,000 a month of debts. Agency A says that they will negotiate a lower rate, so that your $1,000 will service monthly debt and, by the way, pay our fee.

Desperate people will jump at that chance.

Creditors will sometimes take a lower amount, because some is better than nothing. Just be real careful with whom you deal. Don't send that $1,000 a month for several months only to find that it has not gone to reduce your debt.

There are good people and bad people in the debt relief field.
