The way I see it there's two ways to do it exact. The way j.p did it or......
Fill the 5 and dump it in the 3.
Empty the 3.
put the 2 left in the 5 into the 3
Fill the 5 again
fill the last gallon of the 3 from the 5 and you should have 4 left in it.
