I had almost exactly the same thing in January, 1968.  I was a senior in college, home for the weekend.  I was feeling very "green" on Sunday afternoon and had what seemed to be almost unbearable pain by evening; Dad called our doctor and rushed me to the hospital, where I went to surgery almost immediately upon arrival.  I was in the hospital a few days and returned to the 5-6 block walk to campus on the icy streets of Laramie, WY, the next week; returning to the doctor on Friday for a scheduled checkup.  He said that I was doing great and could probably return to college the next week.   "Doc, I thought you said this week, I've been back to college all week!"   The second week back was better, but finals suffered.
