Re-inventions don't always work. Think New Coke. I remember when Burger King tried reinventing the french fry in order to steal market share from McDonald's, spent millions, won repeated taste tests, but failed to move the meter on market share. Hardee's/Carl's gave up on competing with BK/McD altogether and went for their version of a quality dining experience--Angus thickburgers. I like them a lot better now, but I don't know if it has made a difference in traffic to their stores, either--I suppose it has, McDonalds has brought out 1/3 lb. Angus burgers as something of a response.
I sure do miss Hardee's being here. Salina used to have 3 at one time, now none, and Burger King took over the one in Abilene. If I want a thickburger I have to go to Marysville or Topeka, and that don't happen too often. |
