Subject: Domino's Pizza

Eastern Iowa
How many have seen the Domino Pizza corporate ad where they react to the public rejection of their product by accepting the criticism and totally changing their pizza product? I don't know why it strikes me as so novel that they have taken this approach--that's what somebody SHOULD do in that situation--but you never hear companies come right out and tell you their product was inferior. SO I found it really interesting.

These people are really jacked up over their new pizza. Kind of creepy.

I have not tried Domino's in quite some time, but I remember it being nothing special--like most chain pizza joints, Pizza Hut included. (Is there a universal inverse property of chain size to pizza quality?) I don't think great pizza is something that can really be massed produced, but there are some places that do better than others.

Kudos to Domino's for trying to get it right! Might have to give them another shot.

Re-inventions don't always work. Think New Coke. I remember when Burger King tried reinventing the french fry in order to steal market share from McDonald's, spent millions, won repeated taste tests, but failed to move the meter on market share. Hardee's/Carl's gave up on competing with BK/McD altogether and went for their version of a quality dining experience--Angus thickburgers. I like them a lot better now, but I don't know if it has made a difference in traffic to their stores, either--I suppose it has, McDonalds has brought out 1/3 lb. Angus burgers as something of a response.

It will be interesting to see if this approach by Domino's works or blows up in their faces.
