Just a few thoughts:
The computer you describe has to be a real number cruncher:
- big disk space with high throughput for the image storage: RAID with a striped disk layout
- Security of the storage with easy backup: RAID with mirrored disks
- High number crunching for your Rimage application (I agree with the XEON Motherboard design: internal cache is what brings real speed)
- Plenty of memory (the more, the better)
- a good video board as you are processing images at the pixel level
- some good I/O boards for the firewire and CD/DVD burners
Pogopossum advised networking, I guess you are already networked, but the kind of network you seem to need is more than a workgroup network!
I would explore the advantages of a network with dedicated servers:
- storage / backup
- communications (all internet traffic goes through one server that can be configured with 'high security')
- print server
- CD/DVD burning server
- network domain server
- network backup domain server
- and a high throughput cabling for all (Gigabit copper is affordable)
None of these servers should be used as a workstation!
With such a network, workstations no longer need all the power, backup can be automatic, security is easier to manage, and all the company know-how is where it should be: at the company!
