| I believe one would want to go with 802.11a for longer distance, point-to-point.
Conditions permitting (as you noted issues), a 32 dBi directional dish coupled with a 22 dBm transmitter (160 mw) should give a 54MB link at 40 miles..... but any compromise in conditions would drop the link speed, as this is the outside reach. This assumes a readily-available 3 ft parabolic dish and a commercial-grade 5.8 gHz radio. Each end of the link would retail for around $750 using Tranzeo products. This link is 54 dBm, legal limit is 53 dBm, so the speed would be perhaps bit slower, perhaps not under ideal conditions.
