I think you'd call it a hereditary phenotype, not a genetic defect.
I've kept every heifer calf for 3 or 4 years. I have at least couple of these every year. Here, they normally make the least milk, maybe because of their poor condition.
Prices are high, Kansas is dry. I think you just have to clean house.
