Aren't you still doing a lot of legacy farming there? Probably need to quit that.
It's dry, it sucks, we know. We choose to live where we live as do the I-state boys. Let's do a better job of keeping our chin up than they do.
And yes, the ethanol market is getting the shaft as well.
Strip Till.. if you call that "legacy farming."
I grew up in the 1980s.. the best wheat growers would moldboard plow.. every acre.. every year. During Covid.. when glyphosate went ballistic.. I drug the plow out.. scavenged the shears from pops stash.. and pleaded suppliers for the rest.. we had the moisture to "invert" the seed profile.. I felt like I was doing the right thing.. summer of 21..
We've essentially been dry ever since. 2022 was a dry fall crop.. some irrigated corn did less than 100 bu.. which carried over through last spring.. Farms 40 miles to our south.. failed a majority of their HRW Wheat.
We're going backwards quickly now.
Were going to need some help. We need an ERP to cover last year's failed wheat crop. As of now.. I doubt we have moisture to emerge a crop. Even if no till.. maybe if you have cover.. but the winds have depleted surface moisture.
Maybe I should check into prevented plantings? Some of our ground has already been fertilized so.. its not like that would be of much benefit.
Karen Braun pointed out that 2016 could be a similar year.. the rains didn't start then till April 10th.. it is early but.. We've a big deficit to fill.
