This. ^^^^^. I see you are in Minnesota. Spring seeding just doesn’t seem to work in these parts no matter how much you water it. After you kill it and work it up this fall and pull a drag harrow over it to shake the dirt off the roots take a hay rake to it and windrow the old dead sod off to the side. Seed plenty of grass seed and plenty of fertilizer, pull an old curved tooth rotary hoe section over it backward to poke the seed in and roll it. Or ideally drill it in. Water at your discretion if it forgets to rain.
