Electric assist vehicles still have a mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the steering rack - the 'lane keep assist' and 'crash avoidance' parameters override driver input. Electric power steering assist can do unpredictable things when it fails. Hydralic assist can also, but you usually get a warning.

Electric assist is exhorbitantly expensive to replace when it fails and in some cases requires a trip to the dealer for 'pairing' or other programming to the vehicle.
