I'm pretty sure most vehicles have adaptive steering anymore. That's how lane and crash assist works. It does not turn the steering wheel it just turns the wheels. These systems also allow for steering ratios at different levels of speed.
It may not be pure drive by wire like an ev but it certainty isn't as rudimentary as you think.
Think maybe I will stick with a solid connection for steering.
