On 30 foot spacing at a tenth of percent grade you can get a 1/2" drainage coefficient if you run 1700 feet of 3" and 3/8th if you run 2300. Most of our runs come in around that range, so 3" would have plenty of capacity in the majority of our situations. Having said that, it is kind of nice to have a little extra capacity so if you decide to branch off the end of a tile you have that option. We do a lot of "modified pattern tile" where we pattern a problem spot but not the whole field. This means that our runs could easily be added onto at some point. That is part of the reason I do not push 3". On a true grid project where every acre of the field is covered, then I would think 3" would be a very good option.
