Did a stave silo roofs do anything for preserving the feed?

Neighbor had 2 Mt. Hood stave silos, 1 with roof and 1 without. He had an unloader in both. He fed out the one without roof first, then the other. Dad had 1 with roof, kept the feed much better than the pit silo. He always said he had to feed 6" a day to keep it good. Sometimes we hauled some to the sheep because the cows didn't eat enough. It did keep the birds out of the silo but there were always plenty in the feed bunk, in the winter. We can get 60" of rain so the roof was needed. Everyone I knew that had one, put plastic on the top. Lots of time Dad would put the plastic down and then put a load of trash feed on top and walk it down tight. Seems we didn't have to pitch as much out when he did that....James
