Right - definitely don't short high div stocks over any ex-div dates...
Shorting crude futures may seem like a decent approach, but I would not do that either. You could get yourself into an unpleasant margin call situation that way, especially in today's world of geo-political unrest.
If you have handsome gains, don't be afraid to pay the tax man - you can lose even more money with these other maneuvers...
