I believe the reason many conferences give the auto bid to the tournament champion is that many conferences don't have a true round robin home and away schedule.


IMO, college sports were better when a team played every team in the conference every year in football and home/away in basketball.   But tv $'s have mostly destroyed that and its never coming back.
