Subject: RE: Pre harvest selling vs post harvest selling

Northwest Iowa
I don’t think it’s a fact of using either strategy but rather the fact of choosing one and staying consistent with that one strategy. I sell a lot ahead because we can’t store it all but also, at least with corn, we keep our options open with the way we do it. Use HTA’s so we can roll into our bins if we have room in the bin picking up carry and usually basis appreciation. The amount of people that don’t have a clue how to use HTA’s vs just doing cash sales because they want it easy just baffles me. Cash sales are great and the basis for good marketing but leaving options open is a vital tool to have in the toolbox. They don’t truely understand basis and certainly don’t understand the HTA and rolling. They also choose to not learn it in my opinion. The forward seller in me hasn’t been the ticket last 3 years, this year it’s paying off again but we are consistent with approach. Guys that bounce like popcorn get in trouble, pick a strategy that works and execute the plan.
