The parts you'd need would be a contactor, motor, capacitor, etc. You're not going to replace a compressor on an old unit, and even if you did, there's no reason you can't substitute parts. HVAC equipment is put together with off the shelf parts, it does not take many proprietary parts. Now modern ECM motors, or control boards are a little more specific, but that I don't think this AC has any of that.

It might take another 35 years to pay off a new unit based on efficiency. Just don't need that much AC in the country in NE Iowa, and when you do, you run it as much for the dehumidification as for the sensible cooling. High efficiency AC is NOT as good at lowering the dew point so you don't get as much comfort as the ratings would suggest.

It's actually a capitalist/communist conspiracy to change the refrigerant regularly. It keeps the barriers to entry high and prevents competition for the manufacturers. They never protest the requirements, they're glad to see the old stuff get scrapped.
