Subject: RE: House air conditioner

East of Broken Bow
Talked to an HVAC guy a couple days ago and he commented that they are changing the refrigerant yet again in the next year or two. Said he's conflicted between charging a customer to patch up an old unit to try and get another year or two out of it or selling a new unit that will be obsolete within 2 years. Said his biggest concern is the refrigerant, the current stuff is already going up as they are working on the transition and will get real pricey to recharge a unit in a few years.

I asked why they are changing it yet again. He said environmental regulations.

the old R-12 that was used for years needed to be phased out because it was supposedly bad for the ozone layer.
Then the R-134 that replaced it was somehow attached to global warming
Now the stuff that replaced the 134 is also harmful to the environment so they are going to a new stuff.

He said the common denominator in all this was that each new refrigerant was more expensive than what it replaced, and about the time the price got reasonable and people were able to charge their own systems (mostly in cars/trucks/tractors) new regulations came out replacing the old stuff.
