Subject: RE: Feeding brood cows potato byproducts

“These are the times that try men's souls.”
Just my experience from sending heifers to feedlot for a couple of years. Long time ago sent holstein heifers to be backgrounded for replacements here in Idaho. I don't remember their ration. But it was based around potato waste as it was real close to them under 20 miles freight.

Well they burned those heifers up, they looked beautiful coming home bred. However between the hoof problems and other stuff those milk cows didn't last into two lactations. Only time in my whole time milking cows that we burned up a set of cows. They were more in tune to feed fat cattle. It was a learning experience for both of us. I would caution not to feed them too hot if keeping them for mother cows, however if a one time deal of cull cows, stripping calves off and shipping cows might work.
