We usually roll right after planting.  I did it a couple times after they were up and that works too, about the only damage is where the one end of the roller stops and digs in a little when turning around short.   I don't have a chopping head so we don't get corn trash blowing around much   Sure makes combing beans a lot easier if it's been rolled.
