Guy down the road has 1 wood, then 2-3 steel posts. He put the hot wire on offset insulators so that if it gets knocked off the steel, the wood posts hold it away so it doesn't touch it.
Works most of the time, but he says that some of the deer have learned how to jump the fence and drop a leg between the wires so that it twists the hot wire and another wire together.
