Faunsdale, AL | Neighboring ranch tried to fly ryegrass into standing soybeans one fall to run stocker calves on over winter. Weather didn’t cooperate and almost none of it established, so they drilled rye into it after beans came off.
Calves had to go out anyway so they got hay and whatever rye grew. Each calf carried a couple pounds of mud around on each foot all winter and they grew frame but didn’t gain condition until the weather dried up, rye that was left took off and the calves no longer were carrying mud around on their legs.
It was tough getting that place prepared to plant soybeans that next season! That was back when full tillage was the norm but it was still hard to make a seedbed! | |
