Subject: RE: Central Iowa cows on stalks

mercer county, il
I’m with Gary, I’m moving mine to fresh stalks this weekend.

A lot of it boils down to infrastructure and management. I try to run them on stalks where there’s a decent sized creek with several access points that are easily accessed and stable (rock), and I don’t feed in rings. Feed as many big square bales or silage bales as necessary, set out on the clay knobs and rocky hills that need om anyway.

I think good shedded hay or wrapped bales (junk bales fed excessively, they leave a lot)and no rings, and actually feeding what they need, instead of a luxury amount of hay, and moving the feeding spots around, as well as 2-3 acres per cow really limits the damage.

Generally some of my best beans are where we ran cows on stalks, and most generally all I have to work is around watering points if they’re on a farm without a creek. Turbo tilling it will smooth it out and speed up planting, but generally just slow down for the rough spots or where it’s compacted and it all works out and is smooth by fall.
