South Central MN | No, you're 100% right that a single portable hard drive is not a true redundant backup.
Personally, I feel like the subscription online backup services are a massive hacker target, so I don't like placing all my eggs in that basket either.
What I did was set up both on- and off-site Network Attached Storage devices. Mine are synology. It takes a bit of know-how to set up, but the end result is that I have redundant backup drives both on- and off-site. All my files end up being copied about 4 times across 4 separate hard drives, and I can access those files from anywhere with a network connection.
I'll still backup to a portable drive occasionally and then unplug it and toss it in a safe to have an air-gapped backup in case I ever do get hacked. I'm probably a bit paranoid about it. | |
