I’m not interested in doing strips without covers mainly because I’d probably have to manage the strips differently than I do with covers. Plus I blend my cover seed with potash and do a flat spread and scratch in with a GP ultra-till. What helped me gain yields and increased my bottom line the most was learning how others managed there covers and implementing there knowledge to what I was seeing on my soils.
Here’s a few things I like about rye:
-leaves soil more mellow, less anaerobic, which leads to less window for weed germ. Less soil crusting.
-waterhemp can’t compete with rye, helps smother it out, which leads to less expensive herbicide costs.
-rye grows thru the winter, even though there may not be much above ground growth there’s a lot going on below, crop residue seems to disappear quickly in the colder months vs. leaving things bare.
