I have nothing against a mandated cattle ID system; with a couple caveats. Before such a thing can be implemented, we need a tag that will be a once-and-done deal. None of this "replacing 50% of the tags within two years" type of situation. Also, I've heard all the hype about national ID systems in the past, and mandating this and that by certain dates, and it just never really pans out. Figure out a single system and be done with it; don't keep trying to re-engineer the system every decade or so.
