I had the inverse happen with rental return at O'Hare. I had a rental car and got a stone or something and left a 3 inch crack in windshield. I had a flight to catch, so was like whatever it is so be it. Enterprise's check in is a long line with a new cars arriving regularly and the line stacks up parked. Just figured they would charge my card. No bill.
I would question the canceling credit card tactic. It doesn't absolve you, it just make their pursuit of collections more complicated. If the charges were false, yet you didn't contest it, they could still pursue it legally to your name and identification. Doubt they would go internationally to pursue it, but I suspect getting back into the country could be problematic. Iirc I read an article couple years ago where Australia had denied entry to someone with prior speeding tickets.
If they show proof I'd pay. But I'm not giving them a chance to do it without proof. |
