Might be worth digging into, one claim for the reason people are obese is that a lot of foods consumed now are high in calories, but low in other nutrients our bodies need to function normally, so we eat more than needed calorie wise just so that we can make up a shortage of some nutrient our bodies need. It is possible to starve on a full stomach.

That and our bodies are designed for famine/starvation periods so fructose, salt, and a lack of water trigger a survival response that converts a lot of sugars into fat, even if we don't need to store any extra fuel.
