My younger son and daughter both do their own oil changes in their driveway. I bought them both a drain pan with caps so they can take their pan to an auto parts store an empty it there. No mess at all.

To the OP. An engine overfilled can whip the oil up out of the pan and then starve the engine of oil. Was there any indication of loss of oil pressure? What ever you do document everything from here on with pictures and video. Get an evaluation from an independent mechanic in writing. Go after the place that did the oil change with a vengeance. They all try to smooth things over. Consider getting a lawyer involved. The company I work for gets 3 engine replacements per year from quick change oil places.
