No-till alfalfa is the only way I've planted alfalfa for the last 25-30 years. I like to plant 1/2 rate, in two different directions. Thinking that with 7.5" spacing, I'll have less open (unplanted) area. However, I do all late summer planting (first two weeks of August) HERE.

Note: if you are inter-planting, within 1st year, auto-toxicity shouldn't be too much of an issue. I'm thinking, moisture maybe a factor, with new plants competing with established plants if you get dry conditions.
